President-elect Donald Trump held a press conference on Wednesday to discuss his plans for his business interests once he takes office, and the left isn’t happy about what he plans to do with the profits from foreign governments he earns with his hotels.
In a stark contrast to his former opponent, Hillary Clinton, Trump’s attorney Sherri Dillon explained the numerous steps the billionaire will be taking to avoid conflicts of interest when he assumes office. Citing the Emoluments Clause, which prohibits presidents from taking gifts from foreign governments, Dillon explained that Trump’s hotel profits wouldn’t fall into that category.
“No one would have thought when the Constitution was written that paying your hotel bill was an emolument,” Dillon said, CNBC reported.
Dillon explained that Trump’s hotels have nothing to do with his office, and as such there’s no requirement for him to take action with them. However, as an act of good faith to the American people, the president-elect has devised a plan that even his harshest critics will have a hard time getting upset over.
“He is going to voluntarily donate all profits from foreign government payments made to his hotels to the United States Treasury,” Dillon said. “This way it is the American people who will profit.”
This is quite the contrast to Clinton, who accepted millions upon millions of dollars from foreign governments to her “charity” while she served as secretary of state. Oddly enough, once she lost the election, donations to the Clinton Foundation all but ceased as foreign governments realized their return on investment would be absolutely nothing.
Additionally, speaking fees for both Clintons have dropped dramatically from over $500,000 each to them bringing in just shy of $400,000 total for all of 2015 amid allegations of pay-to-play and influence peddling. It’s also worth noting that Hillary had planned to keep her “charity” open if she were to have won the presidency, which undoubtedly would have created the appearance of a conflict of interest.
If you’re still concerned over whether or not America made the right choice, Trump’s latest move should help ease your mind a little. After all, he’s taking great steps to avoid the appearance of conflicts, whereas Hillary already demonstrated how she would have acted while she was America’s top diplomat, which means our nation would have been for sale to the highest bidder if she were to have made it into the White House.
So America, we definitely dodged a bullet.
TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
