Two police officers have been shot while responding to a robbery in downtown Seattle. Both are officers with the Seattle Police Department. One officer was shot in the chest but saved by a bulletproof vest.
The other was shot in both the chin and ribcage, according to Seattle Mayor Ed Murray in a news conference held near the scene. Deputy Police Chief Carmen Best said a third officer suffered a minor finger injury, but declined to be transported to the hospital.
Murray said at the news conference “Our hearts and our thoughts are with those officers and with their families.”
Investigators said they were seeking a third suspect, who they described as a 5-foot-11 black male, with a dark complexion, weighing 250 pounds and wearing a black jacket, glasses and a Seattle Seahawks ski cap.
Police cruisers flooded the area, closing streets, and officers warned people to stay away.
“We’ve got the doors locked, and the cops are all around us,” said Cindi Raykovich, co-owner of a nearby running shoe store. “They want us to stay in the back room. When we walk out front, there’s a guy standing out front who points at us and tells us to go back.”
The robbery took place at a 7-11 convenience store near Pioneer Square, known as the oldest neighborhood in Seattle. The three thugs fled on foot but began fighting when police tried to stop them a block away from the scene of the crime.
While one officer fought to subdue one of the thugs on the ground as he fought to flee the scene of the crime, another female thug hit that police officer over the head with a bottle. The two thugs then fled while a third thug shot at the police, who then returned fire. Thug #3 then barricaded himself in a nearby building turning the incident into a shootout.
According to Dr. Stephen Mitchell, a 30-year-old male officer was in “serious but stable” condition and the other officer, a 42-year-old woman, was in “satisfactory condition.”
The department posted the shooting on Twitter and a robbery had been reported near the waterfront. There was a heavy police presence in the area closing streets and warning people to stay away for safety reasons.
This is a developing story.
