A Muslim man who has been ‘flagged’ by authorities for extremism rammed his vehicle, loaded with explosives, into a police van on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, leaving the driver dead in an “attempted suicide attack.”

Police said that the man had an AK-47, handguns, ammunition, explosives and canisters filled with gasoline in his vehicle.

Immediately after the explosion, police officers smashed open the windows of the car while it was in flames and dragged the terrorist out but he died a few minutes later.

The police van caught fire, but officers used fire extinguishers to put out the flames. The bomb squad was called to the scene.

Fox News reports that France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation into the incident.

There were no other reported injuries.

Champs-Elysées is Paris’ most popular avenue and one of the city’s popular tourist attraction. This was the second incident on the avenue this year. An attacker defending the Islamic State terror group shot and killed a police officer on the Champs-Elysées in April, days before a presidential election, prompting an extensive security operation. France is under a state of emergency after a string of deadly Islamic extremist attacks.

Collomb said said he will present a bill on Wednesday at a Cabinet meeting to extend the state of emergency from July 15, its current expiration date, until Nov. 1. He added that Monday’s incident showed that a new security law “is needed” in France and the measure would “maintain a high security level” beyond the end of the state of emergency.

“Large explosion and shots fired on Champs Elysee looks like on person on ground.. everyone told to run.”

Experts said that the curiously strange yellow smoke coming from the car suggested that it contained explosive material that failed to properly blow up on contact, The Telegraph reports.

Jacques Poinas, ex-head of the French anti-terror coordination unit, told BFMTV: “It appears the explosive part didn’t work. The device was apparently ignited but didn’t go off. It could also be that that the assailant was too badly injured in the collision to go through with his plan.”

The entire sector has been cordoned off and forensic experts are conducting their investigation. Police asked people to avoid the area.

The incident is now “under control” but police are still blocking the area. The nearest metro station, Champs-Elysées Clémenceau, has been closed.

Just another day in paradise.
