Sassy Liberty AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –

As the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission prepares to be heard by the Supreme Court during its 2017 term, the list of defenders on the side of Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips is growing by leaps and bounds. Many prominent American leaders have come out in support of Phillips in his case against Colorado’s order that he promote same-sex marriage in violation of his faith.

The Department of Justice has filed a brief on Phillips’ behalf in support of his case, as have 20 different states, 86 members of Congress, 479 creative professionals, 34 legal scholars, 33 family policy organizations, 22 Utah Republican state senators, and 14 legal and economic scholars.

The Alliance Defending Freedom, counsel for Phillips in his case coming before the U.S. Supreme Court this fall, cited 45 friend-of-the-court briefs that have been submitted to the high court in support of the Colorado cake artist and Cakeshop owner.  Of further note, Phillips has also garnered significant support from a great many organizations across the nation –

Of further note, Phillips has also garnered significant support from a great many organizations across the nation –

  • the Becket Fund
  • the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
  • Focus on the Family
  • Samaritan’s Purse
  • the Navigators
  • Tyndale House
  • Cato Institute
  • Christian  Law Association
  • Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
  • the National Association of Evangelicals
  • the Rabbinical Council of America
  • the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America
  • Concerned Women for America
  • numerous Christian colleges
  • the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission
  • First Amendment Lawyers Association
  • Foundation for Moral Law
  • Aaron and Melissa Klein formerly of Sweet Cakes by Melissa out of Oregon.
  • Family Research Council
  • U.S. Justice Foundation
  • Thomas More Society
  • Numerous Catholic groups, led by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Many of these groups and individuals, as well as many Americans across the nation, understand that from its very foundation America was based upon religious liberty and the freedom to choose and to speak.  They recognize that the U.S. Constitution was written to protect Phillips’ religious rights by declining to support something that conflicts with his beliefs.

However, many on the left continue to prove they have no concept of what freedom means nor any interest in upholding the U.S. Constitution. Senator Kamala Harris (CA-D) is one such person.  The former California Attorney General and the proposed Democrat 2020 presidential candidate took to Twitter to lash out at the DOJ for their support of Masterpiece Cakeshop.

“Shame on the Justice Department for siding with discrimination. It has no place in our society.”

Sadly, it seems many every day Americans understand the U.S. Constitution better than a woman with a Doctor of Jurisprudence behind her name, a woman who claims to have made a living defending that very document.  Many of those individuals took to Twitter to Harris just how wrong she is.

ADF has filed their opening brief in the case just days ago citing the state of Colorado’s consistent opposition towards anyone who publicly objects to supporting same-sex marriage. Phillips was ordered by Colorado’s Civil Rights Commission to create his customized wedding cakes for same sex weddings just as he would for traditional weddings if he was to continue in the business of creating wedding cakes.  In addition, Phillips was forced to attend state-mandated “re-education” regarding homosexual rights to correct his “wrong thinking” along with that of his staff.

Phillips chose to be consistent with his Christian beliefs after the state of Colorado’s order.  Rather than compromise, he simply chose not to make wedding cakes at all.  His family has received death threats and even had a member of the state’s Civil Rights Commission liken him to a Nazi publicly during a hearing.

Colorado Civil Rights Commissioner, Diann Rice stated of Phillips –

“I would also like to reiterate what we said in the hearing or the last meeting. Freedom of religion and religion has been used to justify all kinds of discrimination throughout history, whether it be slavery, whether it be the Holocaust, whether it be – I mean, we – we can list hundreds of situations where freedom of religion has been used to justify discrimination. And to me it is one of the most despicable pieces of rhetoric that people can use to – to use their religion to hurt others.”
